1. Musicology Activity 

Create a google doc. Name the doc, "Studentname_RWA". Save the file under the class google drive. Copy - paste these questions into the doc, complete the questions and submit the file once you have finished. 

  1. What is the name of the effect in the cello part bar 2-3? Why do you think the composer decided to feature this effect in her work? 

  2. If you were to listen to this piece without the score, can you figure out what the time signature/s is? How does Macens create a sense of "free time" or an absence of a regular beat/pulse?

  3. In what key is this piece composed? Hint: it's a mode

  4. What does "con sord" mean? 

  5. How does Macens explore the timbre of stringed instruments in her work? List specific techniques she used as well as the tone colour/effect she was after?

  6. What is the name of the clef read by the viola? What about the clef in bar 6 of the cello?

2. Transposition Activity

Transpose bars 85 - 87 of the viola part into treble clef on manuscript and hand it in to your teacher. Remember: The note on the middle line of the alto clef (B in treble clef) is Middle C.
