Watch Vine's seminar on Movement 1:
"I Smell the Unicorn"

2. Musicology Activity - Movt 4: The Doppelgänger

Create a google doc. Name the doc, "Studentname_Doppelganger". Save the file under the class google drive. Copy - paste these questions into the doc, complete the questions and submit the file once you have finished.

  1. Listen to the entire movement again, making annotations on the score of interesting musical features you hear.

  2. List the instrumentation used in this movement. Describe the roles of each instrumental family/solo instrument and at what bar/section they switch roles.
eg. strings - provide harmonic support until bar 33 where the clarinets are playing short
    interjections between the melody

  3. Note the "plus sign" on top of the horns at Rehearsal Mark L (bar 246). What does this notation mean, and which instrument are the horns responding to?
List reasons why Vine might choose to use this specific effect here.

  4. Describe the interactions between the solo trombone and the orchestra. How does it reflect the title, "The Doppelgänger"?

  5. At what point does the texture completely change from dense to sparse? Which instrument marks this change?

  6. Describe the mood from 15:18 to the end of the movement. How does this section provide both UNITY and CONTRAST with the entire movement?
