YEE - HAW!

This kit contains a variety of classroom arrangements of a piece I wrote in 2018 called, 'Yee-Haw'.


The mixed-bag arrangement ensures that each student will have a part that is suitable for his or her instrument and skill level. The arrangement includes transposed parts, part in alto clef, chord diagrams etc. There are 5 short sections in this arrangement:

Section A

Improvisation Section

Section B

Section C(followed by a return to Section B one last time.)


Within the mixed-bag arrangement is a built-in improvisation section (which is a repeat of Section A, but with the melody omitted). Students on Melody 1 are to improvise based on the notes of the C Major Pentatonic Scale. Students on Melody 2 are to improvise based on the notes in the F and G Major Pentatonic Scales, as an “answer” to Melody 1. Call and Response is created between the two parts by swapping turns every 2 bars. This provides students a basic introduction on improvisation and raises awareness and the importance of active and creative listening.


The orff arrangement is a shorter and simpler version of Yee-Haw. This resource allows students to be familiar with the song through rote learning on body percussion and orff instruments, before transferring to band instruments. This arrangement is based on Orff pedagogy, teaching students about rhythmic ostinati, call and response, borduns etc. It may be useful to add words/lyrics underneath the melody, the ostinati and the borden so that the syncopated rhythms can be easily learnt and understood.


All arrangements include audio excerpts of individual parts for aural learning, with a backing track for practising improvisation in the mixed-bag arrangement.


This kit also includes the original score of ‘Yee-Haw’ scored for 3 violins and body percussion. This can be played by a string trio, or rearranged as repertoire for string quartets and ensembles in the school.
